Back in 2003, I brought my mom out to California so I could place her in an assisted living facility close to where I lived.
Every month, I would take her to see her doctor whose office was located along a convenient bus line. Because she was confined to a wheelchair, this was the most efficient and least painful way for her to travel.
The bus lift located at the back door could take her wheelchair and all onto the bus and then she could be strapped in a safe area reserved for the handicapped.
After one of her appointments, we were walking back to the bus stop to wait for our ride back home.
Sitting there on the bench was a young man about 25 years old reading a small prayer book or bible.
I sat beside him on his left with my mom at my side in her wheelchair. I said something to her addressing her as "Mom" and she said to me, "Why do you keep calling me Mom?" At this stage in her life, she suffered from dementia and could not remember me anymore as her girl.
After noticing the sad look on my face, the young man then spoke to me and said, "These things happen.
Try not to feel badly about the fact your Mom no longer knows you like she once did.
You are a good daughter taking care of your mother like you do. One day Our Father will take care of you."
Then he looked over at Mom and when I glanced over at her, she had the biggest smile on her face I ever saw.
He never said a word to her - just kindly looked into her eyes.
Shortly after that the bus came and everyone including the young man got on board and took their seats.
After everyone was safely seated, the driver closed the front door and proceeded to lower the lift at the back door for Mom and me to board.
Once we were all settled in and the bus began to move down the street, I looked around the bus at everyone seated and noticed something very strange.
The young man wasn't on the bus. I saw him board with the others. I saw him drop in his fare. And the driver closed the front door so no one could exit the bus.
He just vanished into thin air.
I believe he was an angel. And I'm so happy he was able to make my Mom smile that day, assuring us of God's love.
Mom passed away a few months after that day.
I hope our angel was able to put her mind at ease letting her know she would be going home very soon to be in heaven.
